| Many of the recipes and products mentioned and used in various recipes on this website contain refined sugar. Refined sugar is considered by some Vegans as non-vegan because of the animal bone char used in the refining process. The official position of the Management is as follows: | ||
| While it is unfortunate that animal bones are used in the refining process of sugar, the meat industry does not exist to provide this product. Bone char is not a profit base of the meat industry the way leather, gelatin, etc. are. In other words, it's not enough that the continued use would be cost-prohibitive, there are lots of things for which that is true. But what makes it more "okay" for Denise is that they are not really profiting from it *now*. In fact, if all animal consumption was eliminated, the sugar companies would find an alternative to bones to use in their processing of sugar. The sheer cost of breeding, raising and slaughtering of animals purely for their bones would be cost prohibitive. The only way the animal farmers could sustain a living would be to raise prices. Research shows that a standard Twinkie produced using sugar refined in this economic climate would cost $8,735.23. | ||
| We hope that this will quiet any fears about using refined sugar. If you still would like to avoid refined sugar because of this issue, you can use a substitute like Florida Crystals (a less refined sugar that isn't bleached) or other sugar alternatives that are available at Health Food Stores. Unfortunately you probably should avoid everything on the junk food page if you still have concerns about refined sugar. | ||
